Rangers Face Uncertainty After Shesterkin Injury
The New York Rangers may find themselves in a challenging predicament after star goaltender Igor Shesterkin left Friday night’s match against the Washington Capitals due to what seemed to be a lower-body injury. He required assistance to leave the ice, which certainly raised concerns among fans and team members alike.
The Rangers started the season strong, coming into this game at the top of the Eastern Conference. Shesterkin, the 2021-22 Vezina Trophy winner, had a decent record of 3-1 for the season, complemented by an impressive .926 save percentage and a 1.75 goals against average.
During the second period, with the score tied at 1-1, Shesterkin found himself in a precarious position in front of the net. Amidst a scramble, he attempted to realign himself but seemed to awkwardly jam his right leg against the goalpost, which clearly caused him a lot of pain. Teammates had to help him off the ice, and it appeared that he couldn’t put any weight on his right leg.
It was later confirmed that he would not be returning to the game, further intensifying the Rangers’ worries.
Dylan Garand came into the game as his replacement, though the young goalie had limited experience with only four NHL games under his belt. For hockey fans, losing Shesterkin, even temporarily, spells trouble for the Blueshirts.
And for those who might not follow hockey closely, the reactions from Rangers fans when Shesterkin went down said it all. The team is undoubtedly hoping for the best, yet the situation sparked chatter on social media about whether the New York Knicks’ long-standing woes are somehow affecting other teams in the city.
After all, injuries have recently hit some big names like Yankees star Aaron Judge and Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. Now it seems Shesterkin could be the latest addition to this unfortunate trend.
Moving forward, they’ll have to take things one game at a time. Garand, despite his limited playtime, managed to perform reasonably well. However, he did allow a crucial goal by Boone Jenner late in the second period, which ultimately decided the game.
