A recent poll shows that 75% of Trump voters favor increased sanctions on Russia.

A recent poll indicates that about 75% of Americans who cast their votes for President Trump in 2024 favor increasing economic sanctions against Russia as the conflict in Ukraine continues. According to the Vandenberg Coalition, which conducted this poll in late June, approximately 77% of Trump supporters view Russia as a threat, while 75% believe more sanctions are necessary. Additionally, 70% believe it is crucial to prevent Russia from invading other European nations.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) mentioned on Sunday that he aided Trump in introducing legislation aimed at reinforcing sanctions targeting Moscow.

Graham stated, “If you’re purchasing products from Russia and are not supporting Ukraine, there will be 500% tariffs on those products entering the US.” He shared his proposals during an interview on ABC News.

Highlighting international dynamics, he noted, “India and China will purchase 70% of Putin’s oil. They continue to fuel the war machine.” Graham’s initiative reportedly has more than 80 co-sponsors.

He also referenced a plan to give Trump, upon the congressional break in July, certain tools to strengthen his approach.

The Vandenberg poll suggested that a significant number of pro-Trump voters, particularly those identifying with the MAGA movement, are in favor of a robust US role on the global stage. Surprisingly, only 29% thought the country should be more responsive to global issues, with an overwhelming 71% believing in taking the lead instead. This perspective seems to contrast with some of the more isolationist sentiments exhibited during Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Interestingly, 92% of voters expressed a desire for the US to maintain its dominance over adversaries like Russia, Iran, and China. Carrie Filipetti, the executive director of Vandenberg, pointed out that the prevailing images of American engagement abroad have largely been linked to conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

She remarked, “The narrative has shifted from President Trump’s decisions to images of the disaster in Kabul, illustrating the complexities of military interventions.” Specific military operations, like the recent airstrike termed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” aimed at Iranian nuclear facilities, have been discussed amidst public sentiment about military action where only 24% of Republicans supported such measures according to a University of Maryland poll taken in May.

The Pew Research Center further revealed that 45% of GOP voters view the Kremlin as a competitor, while 40% categorize it as an enemy.

The coalition named after Senator Arthur Vandenberg, hailing from mid-20th century Michigan, comprises individuals from both Republican and Democratic administrations and focuses on international relations, especially during Trump’s first term. The sampling for the poll consisted of 1,225 Trump supporters surveyed from June 25-26, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8%.
