Fraud Scheme Targets Fox Communities Credit Union

Prosecutors have characterized a significant fraud operation that defrauded Fox Communities Credit Union of nearly $200,000 as a “systematic and sophisticated attack” orchestrated by organized criminal groups.

Here’s what we know so far.

Individuals Involved in the Fraud

As of August 29th, authorities have charged 17 individuals related to this fraud scheme. They all face various accusations of fraud against financial institutions and money laundering, with the amounts involved differing by case.

Each of the 17 defendants was charged with fraud against financial entities. Fourteen of them are linked to amounts ranging from $500 to $10,000. The other three—Terry Hendricks, Deandre Macontee, and Demetrius King Jr.—are accused in connection with sums between $10,000 and $100,000.

Out of the total, 16 suspects were charged with money laundering, while only Addy Harden was not implicated in that aspect.

The Financial Impact on the Credit Union

As per legal complaints, Fox Communities Credit Union has incurred losses totaling $192,195.80 after compensating the affected members. Meanwhile, Community First Credit Union reported losses of $23,144.45 in relation to the same scheme.

Melanie Draheim, the credit union’s marketing director, emphasized that ensuring member funds are secure and protected is a top priority, leading them to promptly reimburse those impacted.

How the Scheme Operated

According to investigations, the scheme displayed a high level of organization, using sophisticated techniques to take advantage of credit union vulnerabilities. Scammers impersonated representatives from the credit union’s fraud team, contacting members directly.

One victim reported that the fraudster claimed they detected suspicious activity on their account and asked for the member’s mobile app username. After providing that, the victim was prompted to send a verification code, mistakenly believing they were speaking to a legitimate representative.

Victims later discovered that their account details had been altered, locking them out entirely.

Once scammers gained access, they transferred funds from victims’ accounts to co-conspirators in Brown County. Often referred to as “money mules,” these individuals unwittingly facilitated illegal transactions, complicating law enforcement efforts to trace the funds.

Local Criminal Operations

Investigators believe that McKney has played a pivotal role as a local organizer for this criminal network. Reports indicate that he recruited individuals for the scheme, often targeting those looking for easy money. This involved persuading them to open accounts specifically for fraudulent activities.

The complaint indicates that money mules were given specific withdrawal instructions and sometimes assisted by McKney in accessing funds.

Fox Communities Credit Union’s Response

Draheim mentioned that encountering fraud cases is not entirely unusual for the credit union. They have a dedicated team that monitors accounts for suspicious activity and addresses member concerns. What was unusual, however, was the scale and interconnectedness of the recent fraud cases.

The credit union promptly initiated an internal investigation following reports from affected members.

Moving forward, Draheim stressed the importance of educating members on safeguarding against fraud, which remains a priority.

Preventing Scams

Draheim shared three key cautions regarding phone scams: don’t disclose personal information over the phone, never give out passwords or login information, and if someone claims to be from the credit union requesting such details, it’s crucial to contact the institution directly using known contact numbers.

Fox Communities Credit Union does not ask for passwords or personal information via phone calls.
