Aaron Boone believes the struggling Yankees are ready to begin winning consistently.

As the Yankees prepare for their game against the Rays on Sunday, they find themselves just half a game behind in the American League East. This precarious position follows a challenging stretch, where they’ve lost 10 out of their last 14 games, resulting in a season-high deficit of five-and-a-half games.

This drop in the standings reflects a distinct lack of offensive firepower. They’ve struggled, particularly with Aaron Judge having limited playtime during key moments, and the bullpen has been less reliable than expected.

Before the game, Coach Aaron Boone addressed the team’s situation after a rainy Saturday. He remarked, “I think it’s a good result for us,” in reference to the previous day’s loss. He acknowledged the difficulties they’ve faced recently but expressed a sense of optimism, saying, “We feel like we’re in a good spot as a team.”

Boone noted that while they’ve experienced several tough losses—some where he believed they played well—it simply hasn’t translated to wins. There’s this frustrating sense that they could have done better, but they haven’t consistently executed on the field.

After winning three straight against the top-ranked Brewers in Milwaukee, the Yankees stumbled, dropping a series in Baltimore. They faced the Mets next, losing two out of three games despite winning their first two against them, and then split a four-game series with the Blue Jays.

Boone pointed out that before the Mets series, there was a rough patch where the team “didn’t swing the bats very well,” yet he felt they played commendably in moments. It’s all left him reflecting on what’s needed moving forward.

Looking ahead, the Yankees will face three games against the Royals starting Monday, followed by another three against the Athletics in Sacramento. Boone emphasized that their offense has been inconsistent, with a string of close games they could have won. He remains hopeful about their mindset, saying, “I feel good about where we are,” while adding that they must keep pushing to secure wins. They can’t afford to stop trying.
