Abby Phillip and Joy Reid talk about conservative information echo chambers

CNN’s Abby Philippe and former MSNBC host Joy Reid discussed the challenges of engaging with conservative audiences on Reid’s podcast this week. They noted that conservatives often exist in a distinct “information bubble,” making dialogue difficult.

Philippe emphasized, “We’re in this incredibly siloed media landscape, and I think conservatives inhabit an entirely different realm of information than liberals.” It seems that conversations can really be hindered by these differing perspectives.

Reid questioned Philippe about how a journalist navigates interactions with those who hold what she views as “incorrect” beliefs. “A significant portion of people truly believe things that are just not true, and they hold these beliefs with pride,” Reid remarked. For instance, discussions with Trump supporters often lead back to claims like the election being stolen, which can be frustrating.

Philippe shared that being aware of various “conspiracy” theories allows her to better engage with conservative individuals. “Sometimes my job involves knowing the latest conspiracies, so I’m prepared to address them. Many people don’t even realize what they’re saying or believing is false,” she noted. Interestingly, she mentioned that for some conservatives, hearing alternative views could be a first-time experience.

She concluded that, while the existence of information silos poses significant challenges in today’s media environment, reducing these silos might help to some extent. “It’s a major issue in media right now, and fewer silos are better than more,” she asserted.

Earlier in the month, Philippe echoed these sentiments during an interview on Pod Save America, where she described engaging with committed Trump supporters as a daily part of her job. “I get where they’re coming from,” she said, acknowledging their struggle to see beyond their specific information bubble. She believes that while there are close-minded individuals on both sides, the Republican information silo may be notably more insulated.
