A year ago, Malik Nabers made the headline when he said he wanted to wear Jersey No. 1.
A year later, another first round pick is thinking about what numbers he will wear in his rookie season. Shortly after the Giants made him the third overall pick, Abdul Carter gave his opinion on how many digits it caught his eye.
“I have numbers in mind… No. 56 is really good,” Carter told Cowboys’ Mika Parsons on Thursday night in the Bleacher Report.
Of course, No. 56 belongs to Lawrence Taylor, a retired jersey, the best player in Giants history and in the minds of many, as the best defensive player the NFL has ever seen.
Carter certainly recognizes Taylor’s greatness. When he visited the Giants on a pre-draft visit, he posted a photo of Taylor on the wall of the team facility.
Carter returned to the Giants facility on Friday, with questions from Jersey appearing again. He was ranked 11th in Pennsylvania, and the number worn by Phil Sims was also retired by the Giants.
“We’re still in the process, but we’re seeing what happens,” Carter said.
What number does he want?
“We see what happens,” he said.

It was a huge surprise last year when LSU wide receiver Nabers demanded that they wear the No. 1.
The Giants and Neighbors demanded that Flaherty’s family not retire from No. 1 and received permission.
Carter said he’s looking forward to seeing Taylor and calls him the greatest defensive player of all time.
“I just want to follow in his footsteps and know how amazing he is,” Carter said.
