Arrest of Kilmer Abrego Garcia Raises Immigration Concerns
Immigrants and customs enforcement officers apprehended Kilmer Abrego Garcia on Monday morning during his check-in at the field office in Baltimore, Maryland.
Abrego Garcia has been at the center of a prolonged legal struggle after the Trump administration deported him to El Salvador, contrary to a 2019 court ruling. Now, he could face a second deportation, this time to Uganda.
Prior to his arrival at the office, members of the community, including immigrant advocates and faith leaders, came together for a vigil organized by two advocacy organizations.
His return to the U.S. occurred after being sent to El Salvador against the directives of both a federal judge and the Supreme Court.
Abrego Garcia was initially arrested upon his reentry to the United States due to human smuggling charges linked to a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. After spending some time in federal custody, he was released on Friday and instructed to return to Maryland. The presiding judge permitted him to remain under electronic monitoring and ICE supervision while he awaits trial.
Following his release, ICE officials informed Abrego Garcia’s legal team that they intended to deport him to Uganda, a country that has accepted a contract with the U.S. for the return of immigrants deported under the previous administration.
The notification from ICE’s legal advisory office indicated that arrangements were being made for his removal to Uganda within 72 hours.
Tom Homan, a prominent figure in the Trump administration on border policy, stated in a Fox News interview that Abrego Garcia would “absolutely” be deported and that Uganda was a viable option for this process.
According to Homan, “We have an agreement with them, and it’s definitely on the table,” emphasizing the certainty of Abrego Garcia’s deportation.
For now, Homan remarked that Abrego Garcia could enjoy time with his family, suggesting that family separation would not be an issue since he would soon be leaving.
