Accusations of Trump 'Intimidating' Zelensky Are 'An Inane Media Story'

Rubio Responds to Questions on Ukraine and Zelensky

This week on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio pushed back against a question from host Margaret Brennan about whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is prepared to sign an agreement. Rubio suggested that there is a strong desire from various parties for U.S. involvement in the ongoing conflict, noting that both Europeans and Ukrainians are eager for the U.S. to play a role. He emphasized that President Zelensky is a key figure who can influence the situation.

Brennan pointed out the potential economic risks Zelensky faces, implying that negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin could be detrimental. She mentioned that there has been a reluctance to impose secondary sanctions. Meanwhile, President Trump, in a conversation with Fox News, advised Zelensky to reach a deal, acknowledging the immense influence of Russia and the fears some European leaders have that Zelensky might be pressured into unfavorable terms.

Rubio quickly dismissed this notion, asserting that European leaders’ upcoming visit is to ensure that Zelensky is not pressured into anything. He argued that there have been numerous meetings since a particularly tense encounter in February, during which Zelensky appeared to be criticized.

Brennan referred to a recent meeting where Putin received a warm welcome, contrasting it with Zelensky’s experiences. Rubio countered, insisting that multiple discussions had occurred recently and maintained that the European leaders are here to support Zelensky, not to intimidate him.

When Brennan recalled Trump’s call for a ceasefire, Rubio dodged the claim, suggesting that the media narrative was misguided. He explained that there is ongoing work with European partners and that nearly everyone is hopeful for a peace agreement to conclude the conflict, even if things aren’t perfect at this stage.

Rubio continued, expressing the need for concessions from both sides for a successful negotiation. He recognized that without a peaceful resolution, the conflict could persist, leading to immense suffering, and that sanctions could become a tool if necessary. Ultimately, he underscored the goal of facilitating a lasting peace agreement so that Ukraine can rebuild and prevent future conflicts.
