Cost of the American Dream Surpasses $5 Million in 2025

The price tag for achieving the American Dream has soared past $5 million in 2025, marking a $600,000 increase from 2024 and nearly a 50% rise from just two years ago, as highlighted by a recent survey from Investopedia.

Specifically, the total estimated lifetime cost stands at $5,043,323. This figure encapsulates various typical American milestones, which include owning a home, weddings, healthcare, retirements, raising two children, and purchasing a new car every five years.

The significant figure of $5,043,323 also encompasses the costs associated with raising two children over 18 years, which now includes funding a four-year university education at an expense of $876,092, plus the rising cost of a home, which reached $929,955 this year.

In contrast, the previous year saw the dream valued at $4.4 million, and just $3.4 million in 2023, indicating a steep escalation in expected costs.

“What many Americans consider a reasonable financial goal is becoming increasingly out of reach, surpassing inflation and making it difficult for many to attain,” the report noted.

A substantial factor contributing to this year’s uptick is the lifetime costs of healthcare, estimated at $414,208, which were not factored into earlier calculations.

Additionally, the price for retirement benefits has surged to $1,636,881, increasing by about $40,000 from last year. The cost of raising two children remains roughly the same this year at $876,092, compared to $832,172 in 2024.

For 2025, the average American is projected to spend around $38,200 on weddings and about $39,381 on caring for two pets. Investopedia has placed the lifetime cost of annual leave at $180,621. These figures only show minimal variation compared to last year’s data.

On the other hand, families planning to buy ten new cars over 50 years are looking at costs above $90,346, a sharp rise from last year’s estimate of $811,440.

The expense associated with buying and financing a home has also escalated from last year’s $929,955 to approximately $957,594. Continual increases in home prices, coupled with high mortgage rates, are making the dream of homeownership harder to achieve, as the report pointed out.

“The truth is most of us won’t earn nearly $5 million throughout our working lives,” noted an expert from the report.

Yet, despite the daunting figures, a survey conducted earlier this year revealed that aspirations for the American Dream remain robust. Nearly seven in ten adults expressed confidence that they would either achieve or were already living that significant milestone.

According to the 2025 American Dream Snapshot, more people reported feeling that their families were either living their dreams or were closer to achieving them this year than last.
