Mural for Irina Zalutka Faces Challenges in Providence

A group of activists, including the Democratic Mayor of Providence, Brett Smiley, confronted the planned mural celebrating Irina Zalutka. Despite initial support from the owners of a local gay bar, who had agreed to host the mural, the project was ultimately halted due to backlash from some community members.

Mayor Smiley expressed that the mural did not align with the values of the city after the Dark Lady’s owners announced their decision to stop the mural’s creation on social media. This response followed considerable outrage from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Interestingly, the artist isn’t backing down. The mural has now been relocated to a Lebanese restaurant named Opa the Phoenician on Atwells Avenue, where the owner has graciously offered wall space for the tribute. “She was once an immigrant chasing the American dream,” said François Karam, referring to Zalutka. “This mural honors her journey, especially in a place owned by someone who truly understands that path.”

Karam also noted that the decision had no political motivation, which might seem a bit surprising given the circumstances. Meanwhile, a petition on Change.org has gained momentum, with over 13,600 signatures advocating for the mural’s original location at Dark Lady. The petition’s creator described the current outcome as a concession to political pressure rather than a triumph.

Anthony Delena, the local Republican Party chair, remarked that the mayor’s assertion of the mural being “divisive” coerced the business into retracting their support, leading to a situation where the mural is now merely an understated memory tucked away on a side wall.

Interestingly, there’s also a contrasting petition on Change.org that has only gathered 15 signatures, which indicates a divided opinion on the mural.

In the background, the tragic murder of Irina Zalutka, a survivor of the Ukraine war, drew considerable attention and criticism towards law enforcement policies following the arrest of a suspect with a troubling history.

Looking ahead, Mayor Smiley is gearing up for the 2026 elections, with fellow Democratic candidates in the race, one of whom has a controversial criminal history.
