Joe Don Baker Passes Away at 89

Actor Joe Don Baker died on May 7th at the age of 89.

He was widely recognized for his portrayal of Sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1973 action films “Walking Tall” and “Cape Fear.” Additionally, Baker played the antagonist, Brad Whitaker, in the 1987 James Bond movie “The Living Daylights.”

An obituary published highlighted his life and contributions, describing him as a “beacon of kindness and generosity.” The specific cause of his death has not been disclosed.

“Throughout his life, Joe Don touched many lives with his warmth and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on all those lucky enough to know him,” the obituary mentioned.

It continued to note that he had a deep love for nature and animals, especially cats, and that his intellectual curiosity made him a passionate reader.

Before embarking on his film career, Baker served two years in the U.S. Army. His extensive career in entertainment included work in theater, television, and film. Over the years, he appeared in 57 films, including notable roles in “Mitchell” and “Walking Tall.”

His filmography also features appearances in “Charlie Barrick” and three James Bond movies. Baker portrayed CIA agent Jack Wade in “Goldeneye” and “Tomorrow Never Dies,” also starring Pierce Brosnan as Bond.

Baker garnered several accolades, including the Robert Altman Award at the Independence Spirit Awards for his performance in the 2012 film “Mud.” Companions in that film included Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, among others.

He was nominated for Best Actor by the British TV Academy for his work in the 1985 miniseries “Edge of Darkness” and later received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for the film “George Wallace” in 1997.

Baker was married in 1969 but divorced in 1980 and had no children.

A funeral service is scheduled for May 20, 2025, at 10 AM, to take place at McKinley Funeral Service in Mission Hills, California.

“When we say goodbye to Joe Don, we hold on to the memories and love he shared with us. He may no longer be with us, but his spirit lives on,” the obituary concluded.
