Actors From the Jesus Series Meet Pope Leo XIV
On Wednesday, the actors from the I Was Chosen Bible series had a notable encounter with Pope Leo XIV during a general audience in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. This gathering also served as a gift exchange and was described by the Pope as a blessing. Among the actors present was Jonathan Lemie, who portrayed Jesus, along with his co-stars Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene), George Zantis (John), and Vanessa Benavente (Mary). The event attracted a mix of tourists, pilgrims, and locals.
Lemie’s experience playing such an iconic figure has, he mentions, significantly deepened his own faith. “It really felt like an act of God’s grace,” he reflected, noting how his upbringing in a Catholic household—his father being Egyptian and his mother Irish—had influenced him. He expressed a desire to portray what he learned from his parents authentically, saying, “I’ve always seen Jesus as a simple person. That simplicity encompasses teachings and values I strive to embody every day.”
Filming Season 6
Recently, the cast and crew of I Was Chosen were in Italy to film Season 6, focusing on the crucifixion. The new season is set to premiere late next year, with its finale scheduled around Easter in 2027, with some scenes shot in Matera. Lemie mentioned feeling an immense responsibility during the filming of certain scenes, but his faith kept him grounded. Meeting the Pope, he admitted, was an incomparable honor.
The actors had another engagement in Rome as well, which included a press conference for season five’s fourth episode and a special screening at the Vatican. The latest season is expected to start streaming in Italy this July.
Interestingly, this wasn’t Lemie’s first meeting with a Pope—he previously met Pope Francis, Leo’s predecessor.
