Democratic Investment in Kansas Senate Race

WICHITA, Kan. — National Democrats are investing heavily in Kansas to support Adam Hamilton, who has made a point of asserting his independence from top Democratic leaders in Washington, D.C.

A significant amount of funding is flowing into Hamilton’s campaign, particularly from the Senate Majority PAC, which is closely associated with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Hamilton has clearly stated he wouldn’t back Schumer’s leadership if he wins in November.

In response, Hamilton’s opponent, Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., raised questions about the viability of Hamilton not being influenced by “up to $40 million from Chuck Schumer.” It seems hard to imagine how he wouldn’t feel some obligation, right?

Marshall pointed out the stakes, saying, “If we lose this seat, then it’s going to give the Senate control to the Democrats. Chuck Schumer would be leading the Senate.”

Marshall also noted, “If he’s going to disavow Chuck Schumer, then let’s also disavow the financial support.” He expressed concern about the disparity in campaign spending, indicating they expect to be outspent five to one.

According to the Federal Election Commission, candidates can’t accept money directly from outside groups like the Senate Majority PAC, due to regulations established by federal election law.

The Democratic PAC has committed $5 million to advertising in Kansas recently, suggesting optimism about flipping the seat in a race that has become tighter than expected for Republicans.

Hamilton’s campaign countered Marshall’s claims by stating that the senator is being propped up by national Republicans. According to Federal Election Commission filings, Hamilton has significantly out-fundraised Marshall, with close to $14 million compared to Marshall’s nearly $6 million.

Tyson Brody, a spokesperson for Hamilton’s campaign, remarked, “Adam has consistently stated it’s time for new leadership in Washington. He’ll always prioritize Kansas. Conversely, Roger Marshall relies completely on Washington funding to rescue his campaign while neglecting Kansans in favor of D.C. interests.”

In total, national Democrats and their associated organizations, along with Hamilton’s own fundraising, are expected to spend about $38 million on this race, as noted by AdImpact. National Republicans and Marshall’s campaign are putting roughly $32 million into the contest.

Marshall has attempted to link Hamilton directly to Schumer, emphasizing this connection during their final debate this week before Election Day.

Hamilton responded, saying that Marshall had mentioned Schumer, “maybe 20 times so far.” He reiterated, “I’ve stated I wouldn’t support Chuck Schumer for Senate majority leader if the Democrats gained control of the Senate.”
