Adam Silver Discusses Caitlin Clark’s Situation

Adam Silver believes the controversy surrounding Caitlin Clark goes beyond a simple foul call.

As discussions about officiating and physicality in the WNBA persist, Silver stated that Clark has become a “political football” tied to various agendas both within and outside of basketball.

“Ultimately, the issues with Caitlin Clark aren’t mainly about officiating,” Silver mentioned. He emphasized that the specific incident shouldn’t just be seen as a question of whether a foul was warranted during the game.

Silver commended Clark’s character, noting, “I’ve had the chance to get to know Caitlin quite well. She’s an exceptional player, but more importantly, she’s a wonderful person who strives to be the best athlete she can be.”

He expressed concern over how Clark has become, in a way, a political symbol in this context, calling it fundamentally unfair. “It’s not merely about the foul. It feels like a political game for her, which is tough. Here’s a young woman simply aiming to better her skills.”

This conversation arose following a recent incident where Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat, leading to significant backlash even though no foul was called at first.

Eventually, that play was deemed egregious enough for Thomas to receive a suspension.

Thomas described the incident as accidental, mentioned receiving threats, and called out WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for not adequately safeguarding players.

Yet, Silver’s primary concern remains centered on enhancing officiating standards in the WNBA. “It’s unjust to her that this has morphed into a separate narrative about just one foul,” he stated, adding, “There’s no doubt we must work on improving officiating within the league.”
