Adams Critiques Mamdani’s Support for NYPD

Mayor Eric Adams has criticized Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor, for neglecting to support NYPD funerals during his tenure as a state legislator.

“If he’s not campaigning for mayor, he should be supporting the officers,” Adams remarked to reporters at City Hall on Monday. “He had the chance to uplift them as a councillor, and he could have done so throughout his time in Albany.”

Adams questioned Mamdani’s commitment, highlighting that he had previously lost an officer. “Where was he then? He showed support for Islamic officers during the election, so did he only feel inclined to lift them up? We need to know his whereabouts during critical times.”

Mamdani, aged 33, spent over four years in the state legislature before the recent Democratic victory against former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Last week, Mamdani honored the family of NYPD officer DiDarlu Islam after the officer fell victim to a mass shooting in a Park Avenue office building.

However, this appeared to be an isolated incident.

According to records, Mamdani had been absent during the funerals of New York’s fallen officers, with several being killed in the line of duty while he served in Albany.

Six police officers tragically lost their lives between January 2022 and March of last year—Jonathan Diller, Troy D. Patterson, Lawrence Brom, Wilbert Mora, Jason Rivera, and crossing guard Krishtina Naplava. The situation was met with condolences from lawmakers in Queens.

Adams did not refrain from pointing out Mamdani’s lack of acknowledgment regarding the murders of Rivera and Mora in 2022, asserting, “I made statements about police officers who were shot or killed. I didn’t even mention them.”
