ADL Withdraws Controversial Designation of Turning Point USA as Hate Group

In the wake of a significant backlash from right-wing factions, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has retracted its classification of Turning Point USA and Christianity as hate groups within its “glossary of extremism and hatred.”

The ADL, established in 1913, aims to combat anti-Semitism and foster an inclusive society. It had identified various groups within its extensive glossary, labeling Turning Point USA, founded by late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as deeply entrenched in extremism. This association implied links with right-wing extremists, including anti-Muslim sentiments and white supremacist movements.

Back in 2019, the ADL highlighted concerns about the group’s leadership, suggesting it seemed aligned with harmful ideologies.

Elon Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, has also weighed in, criticizing the ADL for its labeling practices, questioning the correlations it draws between “Christian Identity” and extremism.

He responded to criticisms of the ADL by stating that the group functions as a hate organization in itself. Florida GOP representative Anna Paulina Luna echoed these sentiments, challenging the ADL’s classification of Turning Point USA as hate speech, stating “America First” isn’t hate.

In a post, Luna asked why disagreement with the ADL would result in being labeled a hate group.

She later engaged her audience through a poll on whether to summon the ADL’s leadership, which ultimately garnered over 11,000 votes, overwhelmingly in her favor.

Amid the uproar, the ADL announced the decision to retire its glossary, citing outdated entries and the risk of misrepresentation. They emphasized their commitment to improving and adapting their approach to address issues surrounding extremism and hatred more effectively.

ADL acknowledged that their glossary had become a source of contention and reiterated their intention to seek better methods for sharing information.

Interestingly, groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter were not included in the glossary.
