After three decades of marriage, Tim McGraw says one of the hardest parts is navigating the changes that come with life moving into a new phase.
In a recent interview, the 59-year-old country singer reflected on how he and Faith Hill are adjusting as their three daughters grow up and build lives of their own. Sometimes, he said, they move through those changes without discussing them much. Other times, they need to pause and talk about how they’re both feeling.
McGraw said periods of transition can recur throughout a long marriage, and he sees them as especially risky if couples stop communicating. Making room to clear the air and get to know each other again matters, he said. In fact, he thinks those conversations may be most important when a relationship feels as though it’s struggling.
He also stressed the value of returning to the foundation of a marriage before too much distance builds. Wait too long, he suggested, and reconnecting can become much harder.
McGraw and Hill married in October 1996. Their daughters are Gracie, 29, Maggie, 28, and Audrey, 24. The couple have also recorded several songs together, including “It’s Your Love,” the Grammy-winning “Let’s Make Love” and “Speak to a Girl.” The latter appeared on their first joint album, “The Rest of Our Life.”
In a post marking their 30th anniversary, McGraw recalled watching Hill walk toward him at their wedding in his aunt’s backyard. He wrote that he was struck by her capacity for love, forgiveness, care and joy, and described her as the center of gravity for him and their daughters.
The anniversary post included a slideshow of the couple over the years, with clips of them performing together.
Even after years of marriage and musical collaborations, the two don’t always agree. McGraw said in a 2023 interview that some of their biggest disagreements arise while planning tours, since they have different artistic instincts.
He also joked that Hill is organized while he tends to leave clothes lying around. After spending years in and out of hotels, he said, he had gotten into the habit of scattering his things—and Hill regularly reminds him to tidy up.
