New York Attorney General Letitia James faced a wave of disruption from Trump supporters during a community hearing, coinciding with the initiation of a federal criminal investigation into alleged mortgage fraud, which they deemed “basically unfounded.”
This situation unfolded at a community impact hearing in Westchester on Thursday night, just hours after a formal criminal inquiry was launched regarding James, focusing on her properties in Brooklyn and Virginia.
“You should apologize to Donald Trump for wasting millions of dollars in New York,” shouted attendees.
The audience’s response included boos as demonstrators were led out of the venue.
“Everyone knows these allegations are unfounded,” James insisted.
“We appreciate all opinions and thank him for attending,” she added, maintaining a composed demeanor.
Despite her calm exterior, James is feeling pressure from the Trump Justice Department, which initiated the criminal investigation after a complaint was filed by a federal housing finance agency last month.
According to the government, James is accused of falsifying records to comply with certain lending criteria in order to secure better loan terms.
The federal claims also allege misrepresentation of the number of units in her Brooklyn properties and falsely designating her Norfolk, Virginia home as her primary residence.
This situation could potentially result in criminal charges linked to wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, or making false statements to a financial institution.
Furthermore, recent state budget items indicate that New York taxpayers may bear the financial burden of legal costs from these investigations and prosecutions.
James was joined at the Westchester meeting by AGs from California, Illinois, Minnesota, and New Jersey.
