Enhanced Regional Situational Awareness (ERSA) systems represent a dramatic upgrade from previous security technologies. These new cameras give air defense operators unprecedented ability to monitor and protect critical airspace. They come with some really cool features that will take your air defense to the next level.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

The camera features infrared vision with an RGB filter for heat signature detection, allowing operators to locate targets even in low visibility conditions. Laser rangefinders provide accurate distance and altitude measurements, increasing the accuracy of your system. Machine learning elements enhance automatic tracking capabilities to help you track objects of interest. In addition, a visual warning system using red and green lasers to illuminate the cockpit and prompt pilots to take immediate action has been introduced to alert non-compliant aircraft.

The Eastern Air Defense Division (EADS) in Rome, New York, works closely with the Joint Air Defense Operations Center (JADOC) at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling to manage the ERSA system. This integrated approach ensures comprehensive monitoring and rapid response to potential threats. Air Force Sergeant Major Kendrick Wilburn, JADOC Capabilities and Requirements Officer, explains that the system allows for more accurate validation of radar data. If uncertain radar data is detected, operators can use the camera as an additional resource to confirm and assess the situation. This collaborative effort between EADS and JADOC enables rapid decision-making and effective threat mitigation.

technological innovation

The ERSA system developed by Teleidscope underwent rigorous testing in 2022 with air defense operators evaluating prototypes from three companies. Teleidscope's cameras were distinguished by advanced software enhancements and significant improvements to existing systems. The Defense Innovation Command played a key role in securing funding through the Air Force's Accelerated Acquisition and Deployment of Innovative Technologies (APFIT) program, demonstrating its commitment to rapidly deploy cutting-edge defense technologies. Marine Maj. Nicholas Ksiazek of the Defense Innovation Command likened the upgrade to the “technological leap we saw between the 2011 iPhone and the current iPhone,” highlighting the significant advancement in functionality. Currently, two operational cameras are installed, with plans to add seven more each year, ensuring the continued improvement of NCR's air defense capabilities.
