Yahoo’s AI Tool Shows Conservative Bias
According to a recent analysis, Yahoo’s AI-driven news tool exhibits a significant bias against conservative perspectives, with only 3% of its featured articles originating from right-leaning news outlets over the last three months.
The Media Research Center, a conservative oversight organization known for flagging similar issues with platforms like Apple News and Google, has scrutinized the Yahoo 100 feed. Yahoo states that its tool “utilizes AI to identify breaking news and craft summaries,” aiming to offer a “real-time view of trending topics online.”
In a review of 1,218 articles from May to July, it was found that about 70% (859 articles) came from outlets identified as left-wing. In contrast, only 35 articles—merely 3%—were sourced from right-leaning publications such as The Post, Fox News, and The Telegraph.
David Bozell, President of the MRC, criticized Yahoo’s claims that its Trends feed mirrors genuine cultural discussions, calling them “completely bogus.” He claimed that Yahoo aligns with other news aggregators like Apple News and Google News in suppressing conservative viewpoints.
“Large tech companies seem to be deliberately skewing news feeds, isolating millions of readers in left-leaning bubbles,” Bozell noted.
The MRC highlighted that the Yahoo 100 also incorporates content from the Yahoo Scout tool, which employs Anthropic’s Claude model. This tool has faced allegations of bias in its responses.
Yahoo asserts that Scout leverages “Microsoft Bing’s grounding API” to ensure that AI-generated answers are “informed by reliable sources across the web.”
In their blog post, the MRC defined “authoritative sources” as a phrase often utilized to justify the censorship of media that diverges from left-leaning narratives.
To conduct their study, MRC researchers examined the top 20 articles from the “Yahoo 100” feed between May 1 and July 31 this year, collecting articles daily at 8:30 a.m. ET for consistency.
MRC used AllSides’ media bias ratings, a nonpartisan entity that employs a bipartisan panel of experts—two from the left, two centrists, and two from the right—to identify media bias. They also administer blind surveys to gauge public perception of reporting from various organizations.
Last April, AllSides conducted its own evaluation and found that platforms like Apple News, Google News, Yahoo, and Microsoft Bing displayed widespread left-wing bias in their news aggregations.
At that time, a Yahoo News representative refuted the claims, emphasizing the company’s collaboration with numerous news sources across the political spectrum, including right-leaning outlets like Fox News and The Post.
The MRC had previously accused Apple News of omitting right-leaning organizations from its news feed last February, drawing national attention, notably from former President Trump.
Following this scrutiny, FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson sent a formal warning to Apple CEO Tim Cook, indicating potential violations of consumer protection laws.
No responses were received from representatives of Yahoo, Anthropic, or Microsoft regarding these findings.
