Aid official calls for increased global pressure on Israel to work with UN

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), called for increased global pressure on Israel to cooperate with the United Nations.

on friday post Lazzarini, on platform X, formerly known as Twitter, referred to an order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to Israel on Thursday to facilitate humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The order also noted that there is no substitute for transporting goods by land.

“Member states should put even more pressure on ICJ orders to implement them,” Lazzarini said in the post. “Those who defunded UNRWA should reconsider their decision to allow UNRWA to fulfill its mandate, including helping to avert famine.”

Last week, Cindy McCain, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), said food was urgently needed in Gaza amid the ongoing war there.

“[O]There are a lot of obstacles,” McCain said in an interview on MSNBC’s “The Andrea Mitchell Report.” “We need clearance at every level, but Israelis block traffic – whether we get clearance or not… Drivers get clearance, but we don’t Large-scale participation requires clear and free access to feed millions of people on the brink of hunger.”

The ICJ’s order follows South Africa’s petition to the UN High Court for further action after an earlier ruling in January did not improve the current dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. In a recent order, the ICJ said the situation in Gaza has worsened since January.

“The court deplores that since then the disastrous living conditions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have further deteriorated,” the ICJ said in its order. These are the basic necessities of life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. ”
