Mike Johnson Cancels Trip to Israel Amid Ongoing Conflict
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has decided to cancel his planned trip to Jerusalem this weekend due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
In a statement, Johnson mentioned, “Given the complicated circumstances we are witnessing in Iran and Israel, Chairman Ohana and I have chosen to postpone the special session of Knesset.” He expressed hopes of rescheduling speeches soon while sending prayers to those affected in Israel and the broader Middle East.
Originally, Johnson intended to address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, this coming Sunday. However, recent developments in the region, particularly with Israel’s concerns about Iran’s nuclear capabilities, have significantly impacted these plans. Israel had launched a preemptive strike on Tehran, targeting nuclear enrichment sites and resulting in the deaths of military officials.
Like many Republicans, Johnson expressed support for Israel’s actions. He stated, “Israel and the United States are united in our belief that Iran should never develop nuclear weapons. The previous administration worked tirelessly to prevent that from happening.” He added, “Unfortunately, Iran has shown resistance and has now declared intentions to establish a new enrichment facility. Israel had every right to act in self-defense.”
As tensions remain high, Israeli forces reported achieving “air superiority” over Iranian forces amidst the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump commented on social media, suggesting that peace could soon be established between Israel and Iran, stating there are numerous calls and discussions happening currently.
