Israel's strikes in Gaza killed 46 children, health officials say

Recent Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip have reportedly resulted in the deaths of dozens of children, as local health officials indicated, with figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health suggesting that 46 out of 104 children were killed. The Associated Press noted that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) mentioned in a social media post that their actions came after a series of attacks aimed at targeting what they described as terrorist sites and operatives. They indicated that they initiated new enforcement of the ceasefire due to violations attributed to Hamas.

The IDF further stated that they had attacked 30 individuals involved in command positions within terrorist organizations in Gaza. Their message emphasized a commitment to the ceasefire but also asserted a readiness to respond decisively to any further violations.

This escalation in violence follows the onset of the conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, after an attack by Hamas that led to the loss of around 1,200 lives in Israel. Since then, the Palestinian death toll has surged into the tens of thousands, with extensive destruction of the region’s infrastructure.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a “robust” military offensive in Gaza, a move that could potentially disrupt the current ceasefire with Hamas. His office announced the directive for immediate action following security discussions.

Netanyahu’s decision came shortly after Hamas returned some bodies of Israeli hostages to Israel, suggesting an ongoing complex situation. There have been claims that these returns occurred early in the conflict.

Last weekend, former President Trump referred to the existing deal as a “lasting peace,” noting that it would largely hinge upon Hamas’ actions if a ceasefire were to falter. He expressed optimism about maintaining the peace, suggesting that if it didn’t hold, it would be a problem of Hamas’ making, hinting that dealing with them wouldn’t be particularly complicated. Trump conveyed hope for cooperation from Hamas, stating that they had made assurances regarding the situation.
