Al Michaels Takes a Jibe at the President During NFL Commentary
Public figures often have a hard time holding back their opinions, and Al Michaels is no exception.
During the Cleveland Browns versus New England Patriots game on “Thursday Night Football,” which was being broadcast on Amazon Prime, the veteran NFL commentator couldn’t resist a jab at the president. This lighthearted yet pointed comment caught some attention.
Just under four minutes into the game, while the broadcast showcased the Cleveland skyline ahead of the kickoff, Michaels referenced President Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. He quipped, “That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie.” He continued, somewhat playfully, “We’re not quite sure at this point. But we’ll be by Lake ‘Something Like Ontario’ or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I’m talking about,” eliciting laughter.
His co-commentator, Kirk Herbstreit, chimed in with, “Some of us do,” to which Michaels added, “Right! Read the news.”
Viewers reacted differently to Michaels’ remarks, with some engaging in the playful trolling surrounding the name change. One user even tweeted, “It’s Lake America, losers. Get it right,” while another compared Michaels, who is 81, to President Biden regarding their mental faculties.
On the other hand, there were also supportive responses, with fans praising Michaels’ candidness and one commenting, “Al Michaels comeback season. Top of his game!” Another said, “Love it! Al Michaels calls it as he sees it.”
Some opinions landed in between, with a user remarking on the freedom of broadcasting, suggesting, “God I love broadcasting. You can say whatever you want!”
Though Michaels is known for his humor, he typically steers clear of political commentary. His previous notable interaction with political issues occurred during the kneeling protests in 2017, when he, Cris Collinsworth, and Mike Tirico opened their broadcast with a discussion on Trump’s remarks regarding athletes kneeling during the national anthem.
At the end of the night, the Browns emerged victorious, beating the Patriots 37-13.
