Tuscaloosa Adventure: Six Friends’ Sports Journey
TUSCALOOSA – A group of six friends from Los Angeles, united by their love for the Dodgers, embarked on what was meant to be a multi-day trip centered around SEC football and a few NFL matches. But, they had no idea that their plans would take a wild turn when they decided, somewhat last minute, to catch an NLDS game on the way to the University of Alabama.
Initially, the trip was supposed to focus solely on a college football game before they returned to Los Angeles for Monday Night Football. However, once they discovered that the Dodgers would be playing in Atlanta as they arrived, everything changed. Their plans suddenly expanded.
A New Tradition Springs from Good Fortune
This crew—Gil, Falo, Joe, Mike, Rudy, and Bernie—had a backstory that was more intriguing than I expected. They weren’t new to this kind of trip; last year, they attended a college football game at Notre Dame and drove to a Lions game in Detroit, wrapping up their 2025 journey with a memorable college-NFL mashup.
This time around, they had set their sights on the SEC. As one of them explained, “We decided to go to an amazing college game since we live where USC, UCLA, and Oregon play. But this time, we were like, let’s try the SEC, and Alabama was the game we picked.” They had actually set their sights on the Alabama-Georgia matchup, hopeful that both teams would be top ten contenders.
When they were preparing for their departure, it just so happened that the Dodgers had a game against Atlanta on the same day they landed. They flew into Atlanta, picked up their rental car, and ended up catching the game before driving to Tuscaloosa, where they planned to stay until Sunday.
And the sports excitement didn’t just stop there. Following their time in Tuscaloosa, they planned to head back to Atlanta for the NFL game on Sunday night between the Falcons and the Ravens.
A Well-Planned, Wild Adventure Across the States
I’ve often heard of people catching a college football game on a Saturday and then making it to an NFL game on Sunday, but this whole escapade felt like something truly special—a chance to create unforgettable memories with close friends. What started as a simple trip to Tuscaloosa transformed into an exhilarating journey where they were gearing up for four games in just six days.
This trip was well-coordinated, with Falo organizing the details. They just so happened to book their flights into Atlanta, aligning perfectly with the Dodgers’ game in Atlanta. They snagged tickets to the NLDS shortly before boarding their plane, knowing they would arrive in time for the game.
Interestingly enough, they even incorporated Mookie Betts into their adventure through a bit of AI fun. As for why they chose the Alabama-Georgia game? It boiled down to wanting to experience the thrill of SEC football.
“We’re all retired and have the time to indulge ourselves,” said Falo. Their little escapade included playing golf and pickleball before the big game, followed by the NFL outing and then heading back to Los Angeles for another Rams game. It’s quite a lifestyle—really a retirement many would envy.
Making Memories in the Midst of Chaos
The group settled into their rental house on Lake Tuscaloosa while Hurricane Isaias made its presence known with some weather disturbances. Yet, their spirits remained high. One friend quipped, “I guess we’re Alabama fans now! Roll Tide!” He was a passionate USC supporter and had aspirations to attend every SEC game in the South.
As they awaited the kickoff between Alabama and Georgia, excitement buzzed about the atmosphere and crowd. They planned to learn the words to “Dixieland Delight” before heading back to Los Angeles, humorously admitting, “We know the cuss words.”
Ah, college football—it’s moments like these that make the experience special.
