Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Makes a Comeback in 2024

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back in 2024 after a hiatus, but it seems the brand has transformed in significant ways.

The show took a break in 2019, coinciding with the resignation of Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek, whose comments were viewed as unkind towards models who are transgender or plus-size.

His remarks suggested that the show was primarily designed for male viewers, which raised eyebrows and, perhaps, contributed to the brand’s shift away from its traditional image.

The revival of the fashion show in 2024 aimed to clarify the brand’s direction. It strayed from its typical fanbase, bringing in notable changes. Not only does this remodeled show feature models over the age of 50, but it also includes five plus-size models and two trans women.

The company seems to have doubled down on new promotions, indicating that this return isn’t a fleeting moment but a redefining move for the brand. A new generation of Victoria’s Secret Angels is stepping onto the runway, and they appear to be a fresh focal point for this year’s event.

One of the new promotions, dubbed “The Secret is Revealed,” highlights a mix of legacy models alongside newer faces like transgender model Alex Consani and plus-size model Yumi Nu. There’s a buzz around Consani, who at just 14, has been labeled as the “youngest transgender model” in the world.

Consani shared that his journey began around the age of three or four when he became aware of his attraction to traditionally feminine clothing, gradually embracing his identity. This reflects a desire not just for personal recognition but also to foster greater understanding for transgender individuals.

Last year’s show showcased Valentina Sampaio, noted as the first male-to-female transgender model featured in the brand. Sampaio’s story also includes an early realization of her gender identity, receiving confirmation from a psychologist at just eight years old.

Yumi Nu, who became the first “Asian Curve Model” on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2022, is also part of this evolving narrative for the brand.

It seems the fashion world is shifting toward inclusivity, with models like Anokyai representing diversity in beauty standards as well. And yet, while veteran models like Adriana Lima and Lily Aldridge are back for the show, there’s an ongoing debate about whether the brand can truly reconnect with its audience or if it’s merely a superficial attempt to revive past glories.

Observations suggest that while there’s progress in representing diverse body types, some critics argue it may also overshadow traditional beauty norms that once defined Victoria’s Secret.
