Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska Amid Ongoing Conflict
As many Ukrainians can attest, having good neighbors isn’t one of Putin’s strong suits.
However, during his recent encounter with President Trump in Alaska, he pointed out that the US and Russia share a border.
On the red carpet at the airport, he reportedly mentioned this to Trump.
At a subsequent press conference, Putin reflected on his earlier comments, stating, “I think it’s very neighborly.”
It’s worth noting that this meeting took place, ironically, because of Putin’s shortcomings regarding his neighbors.
Since his massive invasion of Ukraine in 2022, US-Russia face-to-face interactions have been nonexistent.
This is largely due to Putin’s unwillingness to cease the war he instigated—and, of course, the two nations rarely see eye to eye.
The conflict has caused more than a million lives to be lost.
Maybe he’s just isolated himself.
There are varying estimates about the Ukrainian casualties resulting from the war.
Trump, who took office in 2022, has claimed that the conflict wouldn’t have started if he had been president.
During the meeting, Putin emphasized that this was a notable point of agreement between both sides.
He discussed the Biden administration’s response to the warnings he asserts he provided.
Trump, meanwhile, was cautious in his demeanor.
While Putin spoke, Trump maintained a thoughtful expression. He knows that even a misplaced smile can lead to misconceptions when negotiating with someone like Putin.
Not just the leaders on stage, but also the press nearby, seems eager to rekindle the “Putin’s Puppet” narrative that surrounded Trump from 2016 to 2020.
Recognizing the importance of every gesture, word, and handshake, Trump orchestrated the meeting to proceed on his terms.
Putin is known for manipulating these engagements with world leaders.
At the airport, Trump ensured that Putin’s greeting was not overly warm.
Trump was determined to finalize an agreement in Alaska.
The question remains, though—was Putin aligned with that goal?
They did, however, miss a chance for a photo op just as an American B-2 stealth bomber flew overhead.
Trump remarked, “Who would have thought? One of the US planes that just took out an Iranian nuclear reactor. Don’t you remember?”
The leaders met for two and a half hours, so their joint exit was telling.
Trump had previously indicated that if neither showed up post-meeting, it suggested a lack of substantial discussion.
Trump Watchers might be reminded of his 2019 meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, which ended abruptly when he realized there was no potential for an agreement.
That wasn’t the case this time.
For those who believe Joe Biden is a better choice than war, this could be a positive development.
Trump’s remarks during the press conference were amicable and formal.
He did confess that while discussions were initiated, no concrete agreements emerged.
There were still many intricate details—“the most significant ones”—that both sides did not align on.
One major concern is whether Putin should retain control over territories in Ukraine, already annexed by his military.
This issue is crucial not just for Ukrainians but also for American NATO allies, who fear that conceding any ground in Ukraine would only fuel Putin’s territorial ambitions.
Many in the US label this as the mindset of warriors, yet nations like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Finland, Sweden, and nearly all of Europe view it as a pressing reality.
For them, this isn’t merely a theoretical strategic game.
It relates directly to whether their nations are under the threat of Putin’s aggression.
Putin suggested planning the next meeting in Moscow.
Trump carefully navigated the dialogue in Alaska.
He encouraged Putin to show “intentional interest” in resolving the conflict, which Putin termed a “tragedy.”
This analogy likens his invasion to a natural disaster—something disruptive yet potentially manageable.
But this was merely the start.
Trump conveyed to the audience that the discussions were constructive.
As the press conference wrapped, he casually referred to him as “Vladimir,” while Putin hinted that a future meeting could take place in Moscow.
“That could happen,” Trump quipped.
Wherever it occurs, further meetings between these leaders could be beneficial for brokering peace.
However, Trump must remember what he conveyed when Putin wasn’t behind closed doors.
During his lengthy comments, much longer than Trump’s, Putin focused on the shared history and connections between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump should keep this in mind. Putin can appear to have a strong bond with you, yet still aim to undermine you.
