Freeman: Rising Star of the U.S. Men’s National Team
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The youngest member of the U.S. men’s national soccer team, Alex Freeman, is likely to play a pivotal role at the World Cup.
Just two years ago, Freeman was with Orlando City B, an MLS developmental squad. With his father, Antonio, having a notable NFL career as a wide receiver, Freeman was, well, not quite the picture of a national team player at that time.
Fast forward to today, and the 21-year-old has made tremendous strides. He made his way into Orlando’s first team in March 2025 and grabbed his first international appearance two months later. He went on to start six games in the Gold Cup final, unexpectedly placing him on track for World Cup selection. After transitioning from MLS to the La Liga club Villarreal mid-season, his inclusion in the national roster seemed almost assured.
Freeman also started the last two friendlies for USMNT and his performance was solid. This surely bodes well for his World Cup prospects.
“I think I’ve learned just how quickly everything can happen,” Freeman shared the day before the U.S. matches against Paraguay. “It’s about making an impact, recognizing that I owe it to those who helped me rise. I want to give back by playing well at the World Cup—just sticking to my game and showing my character.”
Although he started as a right-back and often plays as an attacking player, Freeman now fits into Mauricio Pochettino’s formation as a right-center back, positioned behind wing-back Sergiño Dest.
“We have a great dynamic on the right side,” Dest commented during training. “I enjoy playing with him. He’s strong, and a solid defender, plus he can switch roles which keeps things interesting; it’s tough for opponents to mark us.”
This position is crucial due to the vulnerabilities in the U.S. defense, especially since Pochettino’s system tasks wing-backs with forward movements, often leaving wingers exposed.
Freeman has the flexibility to advance further up the pitch, but given that Dest often shifts toward a more forward role, Freeman must maintain a key defensive presence. This evolution in his career highlights the rapid progress he’s made.
“As an offensive fullback, prioritizing defense is essential,” Freeman pointed out. “Ultimately, your core role is still as a defender. You need that defensive focus, especially within Pochettino’s tactics. Being valuable in both aspects of the field is crucial.”
However, it’s his offensive contributions that have truly accelerated his rise. For instance, he recently assisted Christian Pulisic’s goal against Senegal by placing the perfect ball for Ricardo Pepi as he darted into space.
Pulisic, often seen dodging the media spotlight during training, took a moment to praise Freeman when queried about him.
“Alex is impressive,” Pulisic said. “I’ve seen him shine, particularly in the first couple of camp games. His physicality and skills stand out, but it’s also his ability to maintain composure with the ball that caught my eye. I liked his overall play; he’s really stepped up.”
