Arson Suspect Compares Himself to Notorious Figure
A man has drawn a chilling parallel between himself and Luigi Mangione, who is known for allegedly killing a healthcare CEO, after being accused of starting a massive fire at a warehouse in Southern California.
The blaze on Tuesday engulfed the 1.2 million square foot warehouse, resulting in damages exceeding $500 million. Bill Esseri, the First Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California, has indicated that the fire is being tied to political motivations.
Esseri stated, “We do not tolerate political activists who resort to violence to advance their ideology.”
Video footage captured the alleged arsonist lighting a fire in the warehouse while targeting a company he claimed doesn’t provide its employees with a living wage. He was heard saying, “If you’re not going to pay us living expenses, at least pay us enough money to not do this,” as he ignited a roll of toilet paper.
The idea of a “living wage” is often championed by progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
On Friday, Esseri revealed that the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Chamel Abdulkarim from Highland, had filmed himself committing the act and made comments denouncing capitalism and larger businesses.
Abdulkarim compared himself directly to Mangione, who allegedly shot and killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in December 2024. That incident, captured on surveillance, became a rallying point for far-left critics of capitalism.
Esseri noted that Abdulkarim has been charged with “arson of a building used for interstate and foreign commerce,” which carries a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
Fortunately, the fire did not result in any injuries.
In a related comment, one warehouse employee expressed certainty about Abdulkarim’s involvement, stating, “There was no doubt it was him. In fact, he was missing, so we were all trying to find him. Initially, we thought it might have been caused by the robot, but after seeing the video, we were almost 100% sure it was him.”
Esseri reiterated, “We do not tolerate political activists who resort to violence to advance their ideology.”
