Alleged Human Smuggler Charged with Attempted Bribery of Border Patrol Agent in New Mexico

Currently, human smugglers are facing additional federal charges that they attempt to bribe US Border Patrol agents. A suspected bribery occurred after an agent at a station in Santa Teresa, New Mexico arrested a Mexican citizen for illegally re-entering the United States after removal.

US lawyers for the District of New Mexico said they arrested 29-year-old Samuel Mendoza Torres and another migrant near Santa Teresa on February 8. While carrying two illegal aliens to the station, Mendoza Torres allegedly asked, “Can I fix this?” He is said to have since given the agent $400 for his release.

In a subsequent interview with Border Patrol agents, Mexicans reportedly allowed them to escort immigrant groups from Mexico to a group of US prosecutors.

Mendoza Torres is under federal custody after the trial was held. If convicted, he could potentially be up to 20 years in federal prison. He could also face charges of illegal re-entry after removal.

The lawsuit was investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol and the FBI, the statement said.

A weekly report by US lawyers for the District of New Mexico lists federal border crimes filed in the first week of March.

The report states:

  • 52 individuals were charged this week for illegal re-entry after deportation (8 USC 1326).
  • Eight individuals were charged with alien smuggling this week (8 USC 1324)
  • 23 individuals were charged with illegal admission this week (8 USC 1325)

Prosecutors have accused David Jose and Thomas Mateo Gaspar of Isayas of hostages after the execution of an FBI search warrant in Albuquerque, and have been held against illegal aliens.

“We found 10 illegal aliens in the residence, including the victim. The victim said he was held in a locked room and said that if his family did not pay a $18,000 ransom, he would be handed over to the “Mexican Mafia,” the statement reported. “The victim's families reported a threat to the FBI, resulting in a search warrant and rescue of the victim. Additional illegal aliens found at the residence confirmed that they were also threatened and trapped in the residence.”

Following the traffic stop at the OKAY Onning Pueblo Police Station, officers arrested Jose Luis Games, Uziel Carmona Lopez and Donaciano Carmona Lopez as aliens in possession of firearms.

Prosecutors also secured a 41-month prison term on March 6 for a conspiracy to transport illegal foreigners. The sentence and conviction followed the arrest of Omar Ozuna Bernah, a Cuban citizen with the status of a legal permanent resident. Cuban aliens led police on July 15, 2024 at a high speed pursuit near Deming, New Mexico.

“Those who violate our immigration law by engaging in human smuggling put both public and law enforcement at risk through their reckless actions,” said U.S. Attorney Holland S. Castrin. “We are determined to enforce immigration laws, dismantle smuggling networks and prosecute people at risk for their financial interests.”
