Federal prosecutors revealed on Wednesday that Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old man, has been charged in connection with the Palisades fire that occurred in January 2025. He is accused of one count of “damage to property by fire.” During a news conference, Bill Esseri, an assistant U.S. attorney in California, emphasized that substantial “digital evidence” points to Rinderknecht’s involvement.

Esseri explained that Rinderknecht’s ChatGPT interactions included a prompt that generated an image of a city engulfed in flames. This image, he noted, was created months prior to the actual fires and features a dystopian scene of a partially burning forest with people fleeing. “We plan to show this image soon,” Esseri mentioned, confirming the truth of this charge.

Furthermore, Esseri stated, “The allegations are reinforced by the defendant’s cell phone records, misleading statements made to law enforcement, and his behavior during the Lachman fire.” Rinderknecht is accused of deliberately starting the fire, which eventually led to the larger Palisades fire shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.

The indictment specifies that in July 2024, just months before wildfires erupted near Los Angeles—ultimately causing widespread destruction, killing at least 24 people, and devastating hundreds of structures—Rinderknecht had requested these images. It notes that the Palisades fire was a “residual fire” stemming from the Lachman fire he allegedly ignited.

Investigators indicated that the fire starter had remained in dense vegetation during the Lachman fire, leading to a smoldering underground fire that wasn’t detected by firefighters or the public. On January 7, 2025, strong winds pushed the smoldering remnants into a much larger blaze, igniting new fuel and resulting in the Palisades fire.

The indictment also details Rinderknecht’s ChatGPT queries leading up to the fires, including an instance where he spoke of burning a Bible. He reportedly wrote, “I’m 28 years old. And… basically… this just happened. Like… I don’t know, maybe three months ago or something. Like I realized all of this. I literally burned the Bible I had. It felt amazing. I felt so liberated.”

Additionally, after allegedly igniting the Lachman fire, Rinderknecht contemplated whether he would be held accountable if a fire were triggered by a cigarette.
