Amazon’s New Retail Store Near Chicago
Amazon has revealed plans to establish its largest retail store yet on a sprawling 35-acre site outside of Chicago, which could give it a competitive edge against bigger rivals.
The proposed store, covering 230,000 square feet in Orland Park, is set to open as soon as next year, pending necessary approvals.
About half of the store will feature a variety of groceries, general merchandise, and ready-to-eat meals, while the remaining space will be dedicated to fulfilling both online and in-store orders.
Interestingly, this store operates separately from the fulfillment center.
Customers picking up online orders, as well as third-party delivery drivers, will have a distinct entrance that’s separate from the retail area.
Katie Janke Dale, an attorney for Amazon, mentioned in a public meeting with Orland Park officials that online grocery orders will be prepared in a designated area behind the store. This setup aims to prevent employees from having to navigate among in-store shoppers to gather items.
Even though Amazon is a leader in e-commerce, it’s working to capture the brick-and-mortar market share as well.
According to recent Census Bureau data, over 80% of retail sales in the U.S. still take place in physical stores.
Officials in Orland Park announced the plan back in January, and Mayor Jim Dodge noted that Amazon’s interest reflects the area’s status as a top destination for large commercial investments.
Dodge added that a project of this magnitude could lead to “significant sales tax revenue,” which would benefit local residents directly.
This week, the Orland Park Board of Directors approved the project. Notably, the village will not provide any financial incentives to Amazon as part of this initiative.
Reports indicate that Amazon is currently seeking permits to tear down a closed restaurant on the premises to kick off construction on the new store.
