Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ to Film Second Season in California With $25 Million Tax Credit – Variety

Fallout, the apocalyptic series that debuts on Amazon Prime this week, is expected to move to California for its second season, thanks to a $25 million California tax credit.

The California Motion Picture Commission announced Monday that it has awarded $152 million in tax incentives to 12 television shows.

This list also includes two Ryan Murphy shows. ABC’s “The Odyssey,” FX’s “Grotescree,” and the prequel show “NCIS: Origins,” scheduled to air next season on CBS.

“Fallout” has the largest budget of any show, with $153 million in eligible spending for the season. The first season was produced primarily in New York, with some filming taking place in Utah.

Amazon also got another $14.6 million for an untitled “Task Force” show, Warner Bros. Discovery got $20.2 million for a show called “Latitude,” and a hospital show set in theaters starring Noah Wyle, “The・Pitt” earned $12.2 million. Pittsburgh.

California’s tax incentives are primarily aimed at attracting television shows that are already in production in other states or overseas. Such shows will receive a credit equal to 25% of eligible spend and 20% for each subsequent season.

Overall, the state subsidizes about $330 million a year, 57% of which goes to television programs and 43% to movies. The credit is intended to counter “runaway production,” or the trend of production companies chasing tax incentives in other states and countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom.

Studios apply for California credits during multiple funding rounds each year, and credits are awarded based on potential job creation.

“Fallout” is from “Westworld” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and is based on the popular video game franchise.

Even if a tax credit is allocated for a show to move to California, it does not guarantee that it will actually move.

A year ago, Amazon won $25 million to move the second season of “Citadel” to California. However, the show was later withdrawn from the program and the funds were returned to the general pool for other shows.

The show will reportedly begin filming season 2 in Toronto in September.
