American Idol: Mississippi Student Gets Through Unanimously with Self-Written Song about Sin Struggles

A Mississippi high school student wowed the American Idol judges with her voice when she sang an original song about fighting sin.

“The songs I write are about personal things, things I’ve experienced, things I’ve witnessed,” Jennifer Jeffries, 17, said during the event. episode “I’m writing this so people can connect with them and know that even though there’s a lot going on in life and a lot of pain, they’re not alone. I try to capture both.”

Jeffries’ mother, Sheila, had a video of her family singing a song her daughter wrote when she was 9 years old. Jeffries praised his family for being “very supportive” and said: “They’re like my backbone.”

“There’s a Bible on my desk / No highlights, no creases / Oh, the pages are still crisp,” Jeffries began.

“I have been feeding on meat.
I have lived in sin.
My mouth was out of control,
And I’ve been acting like a wild child,” the song continued.

As the song progresses, Jeffries sings that he is dedicated to praising God for the rest of his life. “I have finally changed / Lord, make your ways my ways.”

“I’ve got a Bible in my hand / Faded pages / And some highlighted paragraphs,” the song ends.

In response, the judges shared how impressed they were with Jeffries’ voice.

“I wasn’t expecting that voice,” Brian said, noting that it was the first time the judges had heard an “amazingly unique” voice.

“What I’m in love with is your uniqueness,” Richie told Jeffries.

Perry noted that Jeffries “has a unique spirit…very Mississippi.”

Brian described the young singer’s voice as “an indie movie soundtrack voice”, while Perry said it was “very raw”. She added: “You can hear the sound of diamonds in the rough.”

The pop star also asked Jeffries if “Jennifer Jeffries” was her real name. When Jeffries answered in the affirmative, Perry said: “The name is no coincidence. It’s your soul that’s there, and your soul anointed you to stardom.”

She then gave the nod to Jeffries going to Hollywood, followed by Richie and Brian.

“I’m speechless right now! Words can’t express how grateful I am to be able to go to Hollywood!!!! Now go get your golden ticket.” Jeffries I have written on Instagram on Sunday night.
