Search for Missing American Journalist in Norway
According to family members, an American journalist has gone missing while hiking in Forgefonna National Park, Norway. Alec Rune, 38 years old, was last seen on July 31 when he embarked on a solo backpacking trip. His wife, Veronica Silchenko, reported that he was supposed to take a flight back to the UK, but when he failed to board, they raised the alarm with Norwegian authorities on Monday.
Alec Rune, recognized for his work in climate journalism, was on a vacation with his family before venturing off for this hike. Family members were initially unconcerned, believing his experience outdoors might mean he had simply lost cell service. However, their worries grew when he didn’t arrive for his scheduled flight home.
According to CBS News, Silchenko revealed that the last communication from Alec included photographs sent from Odda, a small town nearby, leaving her anxious after that point. She described his passion for the Arctic—his fascination with glaciers and the impact of climate change—indicating that he often seeks out remote, chilly regions.
Although Alec and Veronica live in London, he originally hails from Wisconsin. He has contributed to several notable publications such as the Guardian and National Geographic.
Unfortunately, the search efforts have faced challenges due to inclement weather, which hindered helicopter operations. As the situation developed, police confirmed that search operations had to be paused. On Tuesday, despite the tough conditions, volunteer rescue teams and police, assisted by sniffer dogs and drones, continued their attempts to locate him, although they were informed that the terrain was particularly difficult.
“The weather deteriorated around midnight. Continuing the search under those circumstances wasn’t safe,” noted Tatyana Nappen from the West Police District.
The Norwegian Red Cross indicated that they are still actively engaged in the search, emphasizing the difficulties posed by the harsh weather conditions.
