American Marine detained in Japan for alleged murder of a woman while Tokyo issues a firm protest

A US Marine serving in Japan has been arrested on suspicion of robbing and murdering a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in Okinawa, which has led Japanese authorities to formally protest to the United States.

Twenty-year-old Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard is believed to have killed Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, in the early hours of Saturday, reportedly taking her wallet and backpack, according to local police.

Ballard has denied the charges, as per the police.

He is part of the III Marine Expeditionary Force and is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, according to the Marine Corps.

Surveillance footage revealed that Yagi entered the hotel accompanied by Ballard, but he was seen leaving alone later on. A hotel staff member discovered Yagi unresponsive after her checkout time passed without her appearing, reported Stars and Stripes, referencing Okinawa police.

Police later found Ballard in Okinawa City and took him into custody, according to the outlet.

The Marine Corps stated it is working in coordination with Japanese officials, and Ballard is currently in Japanese custody.

In a declaration obtained by Reuters, the Marine Corps emphasized that it regards these accusations with the utmost seriousness and expects all Marines to maintain high standards of conduct.

The incident drew immediate outrage from high-ranking Japanese officials. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi offered her condolences to Yagi’s family and expressed that her government had made a “strong protest” to the United States.

Takaichi remarked, in an English translation of her statement, “The occurrence of such an extremely brutal and heinous incident is a matter of profound regret.”

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also summoned US Ambassador George Glass, urging complete cooperation in the investigation, stricter regulations for American military personnel, and preventive measures against such incidents in the future.

Glass expressed sorrow over the loss and assured that the US would collaborate with Japanese authorities.

This situation arises amidst longstanding tensions regarding the significant presence of US military forces in Okinawa.

Most of the approximately 18,000 Marines in Japan are stationed in Okinawa, where incidents involving US personnel, aircraft mishaps, and noise have intermittently sparked local opposition to the American military.

Okinawa holds strategic importance for the US-Japan alliance due to its location in the western Pacific, particularly in light of increasing concerns regarding China’s military activities in the area.
