American swimmer Lilly King gets engaged moments after qualifying for Olympics in 200-meter breaststroke

American swimmer Lilly King is heading to Paris next month after two victories. Olympic Gold Medalist After she placed second in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Thursday night, her longtime boyfriend proposed marriage.

King, who had already qualified by winning the women’s 100-meter breaststroke, was walking poolside at Lucas Oil Stadium after qualifying for her second individual event when she noticed her ex-boyfriend Indiana University swimmers James Wells approached her.

“It’s been amazing watching you these last four years, both in and out of the pool, and watching you grow,” Wells said in a video shared by NBC Sports.

“I don’t regret for a second that I quit my job and moved half way across the country to be with you. It’s been an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see what’s to come. So, Lily Camille King, will you marry me?”

King, 27, immediately said yes, and the two kissed and became engaged.

“I didn’t see it,” Team USA’s Ryan Murphy said of King’s engagement.

“I can’t believe it. I’d love to hear her reaction when he proposes to her while she’s out of breath and soaking wet. I can’t believe it. She must be climaxing.”

In an interview after the proposal, King said she was caught completely off guard, but that former teammate Annie Lazer had suggested she let her hair down moments before.

King, a five-time Olympic medalist, will compete in her third Summer Olympics next month. She won silver in the 200-meter breaststroke and bronze in the 100-meter in Tokyo.
