Reports indicate that American tourists came to the aid of two women who were stabbed in the face by asylum seekers while using a streetcar in Germany.
According to a fundraiser started by the girlfriend of his brother, 21-year-old John Rudat was traveling in Dresden when he stepped in to help during the attack by Syrian men.
Recently certified as a paramedic, Rudat, who also models part-time, ended up with a significant facial scar from the incident.
His brother’s girlfriend described the attack as devastating and demanded justice, highlighting the physical, emotional, and financial challenges Rudat now faces while he recovers.
Authorities arrested a 21-year-old Syrian man connected to the attack, but he was reportedly released due to insufficient grounds for detention, according to German media. A senior prosecutor stated that the evidence didn’t convincingly link him to the knife assault.
After the ordeal, Rudat, who hails from upstate New York, expressed his frustrations with Europe’s immigration policies on social media. He was left with serious injuries and visible bandaging.
Compounding the situation, local reports revealed that the assailant didn’t face serious repercussions, frustrating local observers who worry about crime and immigrant accountability.
The U.S. embassy in Berlin also condemned the attack, stating that Rudat displayed extraordinary bravery in protecting his fellow passengers.
