The Trump administration recently shared plans for an event on the National Mall aimed at celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary through worship services. This announcement came earlier this summer, with President Donald Trump confirming on Thursday that these faith events are set for this summer under the title “Rededicate 250: National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving,” slated for May 17.
The event will feature various performers, including Christian artists, religious figures, celebrities, and members of the presidential cabinet. It’s planned to run all day, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with doors opening as early as 4:30 a.m.
Freedom 250, the organization coordinating the celebration with the White House, expressed the goal of “rededicating” the nation through “speech, song, and storytelling.” Senior Advisor to the President, Vince Haley, spoke about the initiative, highlighting his aspiration to cultivate a nation that prays for its leaders while honoring the commitment of being “one nation under God.”
Haley stressed that the event isn’t merely about prayer; it also includes worship, speeches, and songs, aimed at expressing gratitude for the country’s history of success and prosperity. “This special event will definitely remind people of God’s work in American life,” he shared.
He continued, mentioning that many messages often remain unheard because they’re not valued culturally, but this celebration aims to recognize and uplift people of faith. There’s something to be said for how faith has been interwoven through 250 years of American history.
Haley mentioned the government is in “deep discussions” with various artists and musicians who might participate. He illustrated a potential speaker scenario, referring to Secretary Hegseth possibly sharing an account of George Washington’s retreat from Brooklyn in 1776—an event many view as miraculous.
Trump has frequently articulated his wish to steer the nation back toward faith, saying during a rally in July 2025, “As we chart our course for the next 250 years, let us rededicate ourselves to one nation under God.”
Haley mentioned that the president sees himself as a strong defender of religion. He noted that Trump draws inspiration from George Washington’s farewell speech, which highlighted the importance of religion and morality for political prosperity.
Interestingly, there has been a noticeable increase in religious affiliation, notably among Gen Z. A Pew survey from 2025 revealed that 45% of Americans aged 18 to 29 identify as Christians. During the National Prayer Breakfast, Trump remarked that church attendance had nearly doubled compared to the previous year.
“Like President George Washington, we believe that religious people and faith communities are central to America’s success,” Haley remarked.
The upcoming event is part of the 250th anniversary commemorations, which connect to historical observances of “fasting, humiliation, and prayer” for the future of the colonies, just after a resolution encouraging the proposal of a Declaration of Independence.
“We want to foster a culture where individuals feel empowered to practice their faith and attend church,” Haley concluded.
