Analysis of the Voter Changes That Aided Trump’s Victory Over Harris

Analysis of Trump’s Appeal among Voters

During a recent discussion, political contributor Chris Chiliza expressed his surprise at President Donald Trump’s engagement with non-white voters, referencing new insights from the Democratic data company Catalyst regarding the upcoming 2024 election.

According to Catalyst’s analysis, it appears that Kamala Harris, the former vice president, has seen a decline in her voter base due to her younger, more diverse demographic. Surprisingly, she garnered less than 50% of her votes compared to the average voter. Chiliza noted that he found Trump’s approach particularly compelling, especially among young, non-white voters.

Chiliza remarked, “Many, particularly within the Democratic camp, underestimate Trump’s coalition. Yes, there was a shift towards Trump in 2020, but the numbers aren’t striking. White men without college degrees—a key part of Trump’s foundation—increased their support by three points since then. Meanwhile, Latinx men leaned towards Trump even more, showing over four times the shift compared to their white counterparts without degrees.”

When discussing the younger voter demographic, particularly those aged 18-29—once a stronghold for former President Barack Obama—it was surprising to see a 6% increase in Republican votes from this group compared to 2020. That demographic shift is even more notable when looking at young voters of color. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders reported an uptick of over nine points in Republican voting compared to the last election, and urban voters in the same age range also showed a similar trend.

Chiliza highlighted how both young men and men of color moved significantly toward Trump. However, conversely, he pointed out that women as a whole started to lean more towards Harris, which could be critical for her campaign.

Interestingly, Trump saw a 1% improvement among women voters between 2020 and the current analysis involving Harris, showing better numbers for Hispanic women (7% increase) and Asian American and Pacific Islander women (4% increase), although he maintained similar support levels among Black and white women.

Additionally, Trump successfully secured all seven battleground states and made gains in various referendums, according to the political analysis.

Pollster Frank Lunz, speaking to California Governor Gavin Newsom, posited that Harris should reflect on her strategy as she prepares for the 2024 race. Lunz questioned her defeat despite having significant funds and a strong debate performance, emphasizing the need for candidates to communicate effectively what they stand for and what they can accomplish.
