Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor released following his arrest for 'misconduct in public office'

Former Prince Andrew Arrested for Misconduct

On February 19, 2026, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, previously known as Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was arrested and subsequently released on his 66th birthday. The arrest was linked to allegations of misconduct in public office, a significant development given his previous loss of royal status due to ties with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mountbatten-Windsor, who has always denied any wrongdoing concerning his association with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, remains a controversial figure. His relationship with these individuals has overshadowed the royal family for many years. He is often remembered for a particularly incriminating 2001 photograph featuring him, Virginia Giuffre (formerly known as Virginia Roberts), and Maxwell, which has raised ongoing concerns and allegations against him.

Giuffre had accused him of sexual abuse numerous times over the years, a claim he has persistently denied. Tragically, she died by suicide in April 2025 at the age of 41.

In response to the arrest, Charles III, Andrew’s older brother, expressed “deep concern” and emphasized that the royal family would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. He released a statement underscoring the necessity for a proper legal process to address the allegations while opting not to delve further into the specifics.

“I have learned with deep concern the news regarding Mr. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the allegations of misconduct in public office. A thorough and fair investigation will take place, and we fully support these authorities,” the King remarked.

Reports suggest that Mountbatten-Windsor may have improperly shared sensitive government information with Epstein during their extended relationship.

The Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest earlier in the morning but did not initially identify the suspect as the former prince. They are conducting searches at locations in Berkshire and Norfolk linked to this case.

In a significant move in 2019, the late Queen Elizabeth had stripped Andrew of his military titles and removed him from public royal duties due to his past associations. He also officially renounced his title of Duke of York in October 2022, a title typically bestowed upon the second son of the reigning monarch, which has since reverted to the royal family.

Andrew, who now lives at a residence called Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate after being relocated from the Royal Lodge, was interrogated for several hours but was released without any charges laid. The investigation seems to focus on allegations of misconduct rather than any sexual offenses.

This recent police action coincides with the ongoing release of documents by the US Department of Justice relating to the Epstein case, including emails that suggest potential meetings between Epstein and various individuals, raising further questions about Andrew’s past interactions and connections.

Despite the removal of his royal titles, Andrew is still eighth in line to the throne, unless he formally renounces his claim or legislative measures are taken to remove him from the succession list.
