Justin Fields’ Opportunity with the Chiefs
Andy Reid has confidence in Justin Fields, which is quite significant because Fields might need to step in if Patrick Mahomes can’t start the regular season due to injury. Reid remarked, “We went out and got a good quarterback to support him. So if he’s not ready for the beginning of the season, we know we have a legitimate backup that can win games.”
Fields was recently traded from the Jets to the Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, following another challenging season for him as a once-promising quarterback.
Drafted 11th overall in 2021 from Ohio State, Fields spent the first three years of his career with the Chicago Bears, showcasing his impressive dual-threat capabilities. He was seen as a popular MVP candidate prior to the 2023 season.
In 2024, Fields moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he secured a starting position but was later sidelined by Russell Wilson’s return just over a month into the season.
Last year, after joining the Jets in free agency, he became the starter but lost that role and ended the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
Now, with a two-year, $40 million contract, he will be a free agent again after the 2026 season. At 27, this marks Fields’ fourth stint with a team this season; it’s a critical opportunity for him to revitalize his career.
During last season, he started nine games, completing 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception. Additionally, he rushed for four touchdowns, accumulating 383 yards on 71 carries.
Over his career, Fields has posted 9,039 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions with a 61.4% completion rate. His rushing stats are impressive too, with 2,892 yards on 489 carries and 23 rushing touchdowns.
