Anger arises as US company lays off 1,600 workers after obtaining thousands of foreign worker visas

Microsoft, a well-known gaming company in the U.S., is facing backlash after it approved thousands of foreign worker visas while simultaneously laying off many of its employees. The company announced it would cut 4,800 jobs, with 1,600 from its Xbox division, which is responsible for producing and selling major gaming consoles.

In an interesting turn, Microsoft also received approval to hire 2,273 foreign workers under the H-1B visa program this year, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data.

This situation has ignited anger among critics who argue that American jobs are being sacrificed for cheaper labor. One person expressed outrage online, suggesting that those responsible for these layoffs should be held accountable, questioning the practice of replacing American workers with visa holders repeatedly.

Another commenter blamed the government for enabling the H-1B program, worrying that domestic jobs would continue to vanish as they are moved overseas.

Some described the H-1B visa program as a large-scale theft of American jobs, pointing out that Microsoft ranks sixth among companies benefiting from it, particularly employing workers from India. The company has additional H-1B applications pending and maintains a global workforce, though a significant portion operates in the U.S.

A Microsoft spokesperson commented on the situation, emphasizing that job cuts are based on business needs rather than visa status, noting that H-1B employees are also facing layoffs in the U.S.

The Immigration Reform Project criticized the abusive pattern of employers utilizing the H-1B visa program. In response, one lawmaker has called for an end to nonimmigrant visa programs entirely, declaring it a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma highlighted the company’s financial struggles as the rationale behind the layoffs, noting that operating margins were significantly lower than those of competitors. Sharma’s approach is to “reset” the Xbox brand.

Interestingly, some online critics have mentioned Sharma’s Indian background, speculating about its potential impact on these decisions regarding layoffs, despite her being born in Wisconsin.

Recently, Vice President J.D. Vance revealed that the federal Department of Labor is launching an extensive investigation into potential H-1B visa fraud, indicating a pushback against unauthorized exploitation of the program.

In related news, former President Donald Trump had attempted to restrict access to the H-1B program by introducing a hefty fee for employers; however, a federal judge ruled this effort invalid, asserting that only Congress holds the power to impose such a tax.
