Portland Trail Blazers Fire Announcer Amid Controversy
Last week, the Portland Trail Blazers dismissed their newly hired announcer, Braiden Bell, over some inappropriate tweets he posted as a teenager. Bell’s lawyer is now aiming to get clarity on the team’s legal justification for the firing and is pushing for his client’s reinstatement.
Earlier this month, the Blazers appointed the 29-year-old Bell as their new play-by-play announcer. However, soon after the announcement, some social media users uncovered questionable posts from when Bell was just 15 years old. Within hours of his hiring being made public, the Trail Blazers reversed the decision, indicating that he would not be joining the broadcast team after all.
Bell’s attorney, Arnie Herz, is demanding the organization outline their reasons for this abrupt termination and insists that the team should not penalize Bell for actions taken when he was a minor.
Herz emphasized that Bell has acknowledged his past mistakes in a public apology. “Braiden is not asking anyone to excuse what he wrote,” Herz stated in a press release. “He has owned it, without excuses. What he is asking is whether a boy’s words from fourteen years ago should outweigh everything the man has done since.” He further argued that if society holds such a standard, virtually no one could meet it, underscoring the importance of accountability and personal growth.
Herz reportedly sent a letter to the Trail Blazers insisting they provide proof of any legal grounds for rescinding the job offer and to clarify their rationale behind the firing. He cautioned that if the team does not respond within 24 hours, he would take the issue public.
In their response to the firing, the Trail Blazers stated that they maintain a strict policy against racist, sexist, or harmful comments. They indicated that Bell’s social media history violated both team and league standards, which led to their decision.
Despite the team’s stance, Herz expressed confidence in their legal strategy, commenting that he believes the matter will remain in the public eye. He also mentioned that both he and Bell are set to appear on various sports talk shows to discuss the situation further.
Herz extended a call to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, urging him to address the matter, suggesting that such decisions shouldn’t define the league or reflect American values today. “We’re not going away. This is not going away,” he asserted, emphasizing the need for a more forgiving perspective regarding past actions of youth.
