Attack on ICE Office in Atlanta
The latest incident of violence targeting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, as reported by the FBI. Authorities stated that an incendiary device was thrown at the agency location on Tuesday evening, prompting an investigation at the site on Ted Turner Drive in downtown Atlanta.
An individual, described as an “unidentified male suspected of involvement in an attempted arson,” was captured on security footage. The FBI’s Atlanta branch mentioned, “The FBI continues to look into an incident involving a Molotov cocktail-style device thrown at the ICE building around 8:15 p.m. on October 20.” They added that the device caused minor damage and that agents are currently reviewing evidence and pursuing leads, with no arrests made as of yet.
Earlier reports noted that Atlanta police were first to respond at the scene, followed by officials from the FBI and Homeland Security. Some items discovered at the location included a plastic lighter and a shopping bag containing what seemed to be two bottles of lighter fluid.
Interestingly, a local news crew observed the site and reported seeing no evidence of fire or damage. The Department of Homeland Security has not publicly commented regarding the situation.
Escalating Tensions Surrounding ICE Operations
There has been a rising tide of protests against ICE’s operations aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants. Some of these protests have turned violent, with two detainees killed and one injured in a related attack in Dallas just over a year ago.
In a related incident from July, a video surfaced showing an anti-ICE activist allegedly spraying an incendiary substance at a federal office in New York City and igniting it with a lighter. This person reportedly attempted to set off fireworks and fled the scene before being tackled by a security officer.
