Maine’s Major Insurance Company and Healthcare System Clash Ahead of Contract Expiry
Maine’s largest insurance provider has made new accusations against one of the state’s prominent healthcare systems, just one week before their existing contract runs out.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Northern Light Health have been at odds over the terms of their contract for months now.
The current agreement is scheduled to end for commercial clients at the close of September, while Medicare patients will see it last until late 2025. This puts patients in a tight spot, with limited options or rushing to explore alternatives.
Northern Light claimed that negotiations had wrapped up in mid-August, but returned to discussions later that month, suggesting a desire for mediation as they attempted to reach an agreement with Anthem.
After a relatively quiet September, Anthem released a statement accusing Northern Light of making unreasonable demands and exiting negotiations. A spokesperson for Northern Light quickly dismissed Anthem’s assertions as “false,” hinting that it might be Anthem that walked away from the conversation.
Anthem asserted that Northern Light had abandoned the mediation process, pointing out that the insurer had already increased their commercial offer by 5%. Additionally, Anthem claimed that Northern Light is asking for modifications to terms that protect customers from overbilling, like preventing billing audits.
“We’re disappointed but remain open to more discussions and compromises. However, it seems Northern Light Health has chosen not to pursue mediation, so we continue assisting our members in navigating their care choices,” Anthem stated.
In response, Suzanne Spruce, senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer at Northern Light Health, expressed her disappointment regarding the perceived public misrepresentation by the healthcare system.
“We aren’t stepping away from negotiations. Such statements aren’t helpful for mediation,” Spruce said. “Anthem refuses to address our health needs and the contractual language necessary to safeguard our patients. If Anthem is willing to reconsider and present language that meets Northern Light Health’s concerns, we can move forward to scheduled mediation.”
