Ocasio-Cortez Comments on Housing Policy After Murder of Ukrainian Refugee

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, spoke on Thursday about housing policy in relation to the tragic murder of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, who was killed on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In a brief interview, she highlighted that “homelessness” and “economic anxiety” significantly contributed to the situation involving 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr., who is accused of the attack. Ocasio-Cortez remarked, “I think we’re seeing it more frequently across the country. There’s an increase in people struggling emotionally due to public transport issues.” She noted the ongoing rise in homelessness and how it can sometimes lead to deeper mental health issues, resulting in violent behavior.

She elaborated, stating, “This, I believe, ties into our housing policies and the financial insecurities many face.”

While Ocasio-Cortez has aspirations for the 2028 presidential race, she did not specifically address the investigation into Brown.

Brown has a history of offenses, including armed robbery and theft, and was released from prison in January under conditions related to a previous arrest for misusing the 911 system.

Expressing her condolences, Ocasio-Cortez conveyed sadness for both Zarutska’s family and others affected by the incident. “It’s so heartbreaking and terrifying. No one should go through such loss,” she said. “My heart goes out to Irina’s family and everyone involved.”

Former President Donald Trump criticized North Carolina Democrats, like ex-Governor Roy Cooper, for policies that he claims allow dangerous individuals to operate without proper consequences, citing numerous past arrests and mental illness as red flags.

According to the White House, “This has become a problem in Democrat-led cities, where policies like ‘no cash bail’ have permitted repeat offenders to remain free.” Trump seemed to indicate that the murder was exacerbated by these policies.

North Carolina Republicans also argue that the circumstances surrounding Zarutska’s death were avoidable, attributing it to policies such as cashless bail that led to Brown’s release. Republican Representative Pat Harrigan stated, “This tragedy could have been prevented. Those with repeated criminal records should not have been free to harm anyone.” He further emphasized that as long as these policies remain, more families will experience similar grief.
