Mamdani-backed candidate wins big in New York state primary
Concerns are surfacing, particularly from a co-host of “Fox & Friends,” regarding a potential “socialist earthquake” in the recent New York Democratic primary. Candidates backed by Zoran Mamdani, including some with controversial views like abolishing ICE and critiquing Israel, achieved significant victories, which has raised questions about the Democratic Party’s shift toward more leftist ideals.
Eight years after making headlines by defeating former House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems to be in a stronger position politically than ever. The progressive representative from New York City won comfortably against two primary challengers in her own nomination, and she’s potentially looking toward a future challenge against longtime Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or even a presidential run in 2028.
The political influence of Ocasio-Cortez, often known as AOC, is evidently growing. This is underscored by three far-left candidates, supported by Mamdani, who dominated their races against the Democratic establishment.
Leftward shift: Mamdani-supported candidate overthrows Democratic Party government
Though Ocasio-Cortez has not been very active in this election cycle, she did not participate in the New York City primary. However, the success of her allies should serve to bolster her position as future opportunities arise.
Political strategist Joe Caiazzo remarked that AOC has clearly established a strong political brand, which continues to gain traction. He noted her rising influence since she defeated Crowley.
Ocasio-Cortez, who recently collaborated with Bernie Sanders on a “War on Oligarchy” tour, might be positioning herself to take on the role traditionally held by the veteran senator. Mamdani, along with Sanders, backed Socialist candidate Daria Riza Avila Chevalier, who edged out incumbent Adriano Espaira, a prominent Democratic figure and member of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus.
Additionally, they endorsed state Rep. Claire Valdez, another socialist, who achieved a notable victory over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by over 20 points. They also supported Brad Lander, who upset incumbent Dan Goldman; Lander had initially run against Mamdani in a previous Democratic primary but later became one of his primary supporters.
Following the sweeping victories, experts are speculating about the implications for prominent Democrats like Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. With Schumer up for re-election in two years, the recent results could complicate his situation. Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t ruled out challenging him or running for president.
Speculation that AOC’s first landslide victory will spark more sparks in 2028
When asked about a potential presidential run, Ocasio-Cortez hesitated, saying, “Would I be president? Could I be president? Maybe not.” The Democratic Socialists of America are reportedly gauging members’ interests in potential candidates for the 2028 nomination, which will be discussed at the party’s national convention next year.
Though the results from New York’s primaries indicate a strong far-left contingent, some analysts are cautious, suggesting that the preferences of New York City voters may not mirror the views of the broader electorate across the country.
In contrast to the Democrats supported by Mamdani in New York City, more mainstream candidates had success elsewhere in the state. For example, Micah Lasher, a former staff member for Jerry Nadler, triumphed in a high-profile district following Nadler’s retirement. In the swing 17th Congressional District, Army veteran Kate Conley won her primary and will face Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in a pivotal election.
This dynamic shows a clear desire among some Democratic voters in New York City for progressive policies. However, it remains unclear whether this enthusiasm is reflective of national sentiment, marking a potentially complex road ahead for Democratic contenders as they approach future elections.
