AOC Criticizes Jeffries and Schumer for Being Slow to Support Socialist Mamdani

Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Party Leaders Over Mayoral Candidate Support

On Wednesday, Democratic Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed strong disappointment toward party leaders for not supporting Zoran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for the 2025 New York City mayoral race. Both House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to back Mamdani’s campaign, despite his prominence within the party.

As a key figure on the Democratic left, Ocasio-Cortez challenged her fellow New Yorkers for their lack of support for Mamdani, who is also a candidate from the Democratic Socialist movement. She commented, “We are very concerned about the example set within our party, and we believe it is crucial to support our candidates,” while emphasizing that failing to do so complicates future voter support.

She further stated, “I think we must put aside our differences and stand behind party candidates for the good of the party.”

Schumer, who has distanced himself from Mamdani since the latter’s primary victory over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced that he would soon meet with the mayoral candidate, though details of that meeting remain unclear.

Ocasio-Cortez had previously criticized Schumer for his support of a GOP spending bill in March, a move that raised eyebrows among progressives. She hinted at the possibility of running for president in 2028 and continues to be a vocal advocate for left-wing causes.

Jeffries, who represents a district alongside Mamdani’s potential mayoral constituency, has, oddly enough, avoided directly addressing his stance on Mamdani’s campaign. When a reporter questioned him about the lack of support, he hesitated, prompting more scrutiny.

National Republicans are capitalizing on this situation, viewing Mamdani’s campaign as an opportunity to challenge Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterms. One spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee remarked critically about Jeffries’ reluctance to back candidate Mamdani.

Both Jeffries and Schumer’s offices have not provided immediate commentary following the inquiries.
