Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Democratic Leadership for Lack of Support in Mayoral Election

Councilwoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed her disappointment on Thursday regarding the absence of support from Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries for Zoran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral election.

This situation is a bit complicated. Mamdani, who has ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, appeared to be a candidate who could unite some progressive elements. However, when Joe Biden became the Democratic nominee in 2020, he overshadowed Ocasio-Cortez’s preferred candidate, Senator Bernie Sanders. It’s strange how the dynamics shift sometimes, isn’t it?

“We do have Democratic candidates. Shouldn’t we rally behind them?” she questioned when discussing the apparent lack of backing for Mamdani from Schumer and Jeffries.

Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that the party seems to be missing a chance to stand united. “What we’re essentially doing is using our primaries to sort out these differences. If we have candidates, they should be supported,” she remarked, referring to the overall strategy of the party. Yet, it feels like there’s a sense of confusion among members.

She went on to emphasize her concerns. “It sets a troubling precedent when party leaders don’t support their chosen candidates. If they can’t unite now, how can we expect voters to back them later?”

Interestingly, Governor Kathy Hochul also opted not to endorse Mamdani, particularly after past Queens lawmakers took action against former Governor Andrew Cuomo during earlier elections.

Schumer and Jeffries are facing their own challenges, especially since they aim to reclaim a congressional majority in the upcoming midterm elections.

In the political arena, Republicans have already started drawing connections between Mamdani’s candidacy and broader Democratic ideologies, placing him in a difficult position due to his previous statements supporting a democratic socialist agenda. Interestingly, he’s now trying to clarify his stance on police funding, declaring he doesn’t support defunding the police.

On the other hand, some Democratic representatives have expressed their frustration with Mamdani’s alignment with the DSA. For instance, Rep. Tom Suozzi suggested that Mamdani and similar left-leaning members might be better off forming their own party.

During a recent conversation with Don Lemon, Jeffries teased that he had more insight to share regarding the race but has yet to clarify his position fully.

Schumer, for his part, chose to remain silent on the matter.
